Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)

Sculptra is the brand name of an injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a material that is also used in dissolvable stitches. Unlike a filler that adds volume right away, it works slowly, so it helps to understand the timeline before booking a short trip.

How it works

The powder is mixed with sterile liquid and injected into deeper layers of skin. PLLA does not fill the space itself. It prompts the body to produce collagen over the following weeks, which may gradually thicken and support the skin. Visible change often builds over a few months and may last for a year or longer, with wide variation by person. Because the effect is gradual, treatment is commonly spread over a few sessions. It cannot be dissolved like hyaluronic acid filler, so the plan and amount matter.

Who it may suit

  • Gradual loss of volume in the cheeks, temples or lower face
  • Skin that looks thin or lax and needs more support
  • People who prefer a slow, natural-looking change
  • Those who can plan several visits or follow-up at home

The treatment day

  1. Assessment and planning. The doctor looks at volume loss and skin quality and explains how many sessions might be suitable.
  2. Preparation of the product. The powder is mixed with sterile liquid and sometimes left to rest before use.
  3. Injection. The mixture is placed at planned depths, often with a cannula, after numbing.
  4. Massage advice. The doctor may ask you to massage the area for a set time at home, so make sure you understand the instructions.

Aftercare

  • Follow the doctor's massage instructions exactly, including how often and for how many days.
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for a day or two.
  • Use cold compresses gently if swelling or bruising appears.
  • Avoid dental procedures and facial treatments for the period the doctor suggests.
  • Take dated photos to compare changes over the following months.

Things to know first

  • Swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps are common. Lumps (nodules) can appear later and may need treatment.
  • Results take weeks to months to show, so judging the outcome during a short stay is not possible.
  • Rare risks include infection, allergic reaction and blocked blood vessels.
  • Not suitable with active infection or skin disease at the site, a history of keloid scarring, and not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • The effect varies by person, and the product cannot be dissolved quickly if you dislike the result.

Talking through Sculptra in English

Ask the doctor to describe the timeline in plain steps: when will it look different, how many sessions, and how far apart? If you are only in Seoul for a few days, ask which part of the plan can be done now and what is realistic to do at home or on a later trip. Ask for the schedule in writing.

Ask how the product is mixed, how much is used per session, and where it will be placed. Ask who injects. Because the massage step happens at home, ask the doctor to repeat the instructions in English and write down the number of minutes, times a day and number of days. Ask what to do if you find a lump.

Tell the doctor about keloids, autoimmune conditions, blood thinners and any past fillers. Terms you may hear: PLLA, collagen stimulation, nodule, reconstitution, which means mixing the powder, and the 5-5-5 massage rule, a common home routine. Keep your product name and lot number for future records.

Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid): common questions

Why do I not see a result right away?

The product works by prompting collagen over weeks. Early fullness from the liquid wears off in days, and real change comes later.

Is the massage really necessary?

Doctors often advise it to help spread the product. Ask exactly what your doctor recommends and follow that.

Can I have Sculptra if I live abroad?

Possibly, but ask how follow-up will work. A plan with several sessions may need visits spaced weeks apart.

What if I get a lump?

Do not massage it harder. Contact the clinic with photos or see a local doctor, as lumps may need medical treatment.
