Pico Laser
A pico laser delivers extremely short pulses. People ask about it for sun spots, freckles, melasma-type patches and some scars. You will want to know the settings, healing time and what to do if skin reacts.
How it works
Picosecond lasers send energy in pulses measured in trillionths of a second. The brief pulse tends to shatter pigment with less heat than longer pulses. Some handpieces also deliver tiny zones of energy that are used for texture and scars. The doctor picks wavelength, spot size and energy for your concern, and results vary by person.
Who it may suit
- Freckles, sun spots and some brown patches
- Some melasma-type pigment, under close supervision
- Certain acne scars or enlarged pores with a texture handpiece
- People who want a lower-downtime laser
The treatment day
- Evaluation. The doctor checks the pigment type and your skin tone. Ask whether any spot looks like it needs a separate check.
- Preparation. The skin is cleaned. Numbing cream may be used.
- Laser treatment. You may feel quick snaps. Spots can look gray or white at first.
- Aftercare. You receive care steps for scabbing or redness. Request them in English.
Aftercare
- Keep treated spots clean and moisturized as directed
- Do not pick small scabs, which can lead to scarring or dark marks
- Use sunscreen and a hat in daylight
- Skip strong actives until the doctor says they are fine
- Send photos if a spot becomes very red, blistered or oozing
Things to know first
- Redness, swelling and temporary darkening of spots are common
- Scabs can last up to about a week with spot treatment
- Post-inflammatory darkening or lightening can happen, especially with tanned or darker skin
- Any changing or unusual mole should be examined by a doctor first
- Not suited to active infection, recent tanning or pregnancy-related melasma without guidance
Talking through pico laser in English
Bring a clear history of the spot: when it appeared, whether it has changed, and if anyone has looked at it. A mole that is growing or changing color should be checked before any laser is used. Also mention photosensitizing medicines and recent sun.
Ask which handpiece is planned, and whether the aim is pigment or texture. Ask what the skin will look like each day after, so you are not surprised in a hotel mirror. Ask how many sessions are typical.
Words like lentigo, PIH and fluence may come up. PIH means pigment that appears after irritation. Ask for aftercare and an emergency way to contact the clinic after you fly home.
Pico Laser: common questions
Is pico better than other lasers?
It is a different tool, not automatically a better one. The choice depends on your skin and goal.
Will I have scabs?
Spot treatment often leaves small scabs. Broader toning-type treatment may not.
Can I wear makeup afterward?
Ask the doctor. Usually mineral makeup is allowed once the skin is not broken.
Can it treat acne scars?
Some texture handpieces are used for this, with varying results.
