CO2 Fractional Laser
A CO2 fractional laser removes tiny columns of skin to encourage renewal. It can be used for acne scars, wrinkles and rough texture. It brings several days of visible healing, so travel timing deserves care.
How it works
A CO2 laser vaporizes tiny columns of skin, leaving untouched skin between them. The body heals the columns, and new collagen forms over the following months. Depth and density are set by the doctor, and higher settings mean stronger effects and longer healing. Results vary by person, and several sessions are common.
Who it may suit
- Moderate acne scars, including some boxcar scars
- Rough texture and enlarged-looking pores
- Fine lines and some sun damage
- People who can allow a week or more for healing
The treatment day
- Consultation. The doctor assesses scar type, skin tone and healing history. Mention any keloids or cold sores.
- Numbing. Numbing cream is applied and left for a period before treatment.
- Laser treatment. You may feel heat and stinging. Cooling air is often used.
- Dressing and instructions. Ointment or a dressing may be applied. Request written aftercare in English.
Aftercare
- Follow the wound-care routine in the handout exactly
- Keep skin moisturized with the product the doctor suggests
- Do not pick crusts or flakes
- Avoid sun strictly and use sunscreen once the skin has closed
- Seek advice quickly for spreading redness, pus, fever or unusual pain
Things to know first
- Redness, swelling, oozing, crusting and peeling are expected for days
- Infection, cold sore outbreaks, scarring and pigment change can occur
- Darker or recently tanned skin has higher pigment risk
- Not advised with recent isotretinoin use unless cleared by a doctor, or in active infection
- Results vary and several sessions may be needed
Talking through CO2 fractional in English
Tell the doctor about isotretinoin, even if you stopped some months ago, and about keloids, cold sores and past lasers. Say how your skin heals after cuts or sunburn. Give the date of your flight home before you book.
Ask what the first week will look like, when the crusts typically fall off and when you can go outside. Ask whether an antiviral or antibiotic is part of the plan. Ask how the clinic will check your healing before you travel.
Terms like ablative, density and downtime may come up. Ask for aftercare steps in English with dates, plus a messaging route for photos from home.
CO2 Fractional Laser: common questions
How long should I stay in Seoul after treatment?
Many people allow several days to a week. The doctor can suggest timing for the intensity planned.
Is it safe on dark skin?
It carries a higher pigment risk. The doctor will weigh this.
Do I need an antiviral medicine?
Some people with cold sore history get one. Ask the doctor.
Will one session be enough?
Often not. Several sessions are typical for scars.
