Fat-Dissolving Injection
Lipolysis injections are used for small, localized fat, most often under the chin or along the jawline. They are not weight loss and are not a replacement for surgery in larger areas. The most useful questions for an English consultation concern the active ingredient, the number of sessions and the swelling.
How it works
A solution is injected into the fat layer through many tiny points. Deoxycholic acid, a substance the body makes naturally to digest fat, damages the membranes of fat cells so they break down and are cleared over the following weeks. Some products use other ingredients, which is why asking for the name matters. Swelling is part of the process and often peaks in the first days. Several sessions are commonly spaced a few weeks apart, and results vary by person and by how much fat is present.
Who it may suit
- A small pocket of fat under the chin
- Slight fullness along the jawline
- Small, firm areas of fat on the body, as the doctor finds suitable
- People who want a non-surgical option and can accept swelling
The treatment day
- Examine the area. The doctor pinches the area to judge fat thickness and checks skin tightness, since loose skin may not tighten.
- Mark the grid. Injection points are marked, and the number of points and amount of product are explained.
- Numbing and injections. After cooling or numbing cream, the solution is injected at each marked point.
- Aftercare and schedule. You receive written advice on swelling and the date for the next session.
Aftercare
- Expect swelling and tenderness, and plan social events and photos accordingly.
- Use cold compresses as advised in the first day.
- Avoid massaging the area unless the doctor tells you to.
- Avoid saunas and intense exercise for a day or two.
- Contact the clinic if you notice severe pain, skin color change, blistering or difficulty swallowing.
Things to know first
- Swelling, bruising, numbness and hard lumps are common and may last days to weeks.
- Injury to nearby nerves, such as the one that moves the corner of the mouth, is rare but can occur, usually temporarily.
- Skin damage, ulceration and infection are rare risks.
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with infection in the area, or for people with swallowing problems in the neck area.
- Loose skin may appear looser after fat reduces, and results vary by person.
Talking through fat-dissolving injections in English
Describe exactly where you see the fat and point to it in a mirror. Ask the doctor: Is this fat, loose skin or muscle? Injections only treat fat, so the answer decides whether this is the right approach. Ask in plain terms what result is realistic and how many sessions it may take.
Ask for the product name and the active ingredient, the amount per session and who injects. Ask what the swelling looks like and for how long, and when it is reasonable to appear in public. If you will fly, ask how many days to leave between treatment and your trip, and whether a second session can fit.
Tell the doctor about allergies, blood thinners, thyroid or swallowing problems, and any previous neck or chin treatment. Terms you may hear: submental fat (under the chin), adipocyte (fat cell), deoxycholic acid, induration (firm swelling) and marginal mandibular nerve. Keep your written schedule and the product name.
Fat-Dissolving Injection: common questions
Is this a weight loss treatment?
No. It reduces small local fat deposits and does not change overall weight.
How long does the swelling last?
Often several days to about a week, and some firmness can last longer. Ask what to expect for your area.
Can I fly after a session?
Swelling can be noticeable, so leave a gap if you have photos or events. Ask the doctor what gap is sensible.
Will the fat come back?
Treated fat cells are cleared, but remaining cells can still grow with weight gain. Lifestyle and weight changes matter.
