Active Acne
Active acne can range from a few spots to deep, painful cysts. The right care depends on the type and severity, and some acne needs prescription medicine. For travelers, the practical problem is time: acne care often works over weeks, and a short trip may allow only a first step. Planning for that makes the visit more useful.
Common causes
- Oil production and clogged pores, often linked to hormones
- Bacteria that grow in blocked pores and drive inflammation
- Hormone shifts, for example around periods or with certain medicines
- Skin products or hair products that block pores
- Stress and sleep changes, which can make breakouts worse for some people
How doctors usually approach it
- Grade the acne
- The doctor looks at the number and depth of spots. Ask whether yours is mild, moderate or severe, and why.
- Medicines for home
- Topical or oral medicines are the base of many plans. Ask for names, how long to use them, and what side effects to watch for.
- Clinic care
- Extractions, peels, light-based treatments and other options may be used along with medicine. They support the plan; they rarely replace it.
- Gentle routine
- Use a mild cleanser, a light moisturizer and sunscreen. Over-scrubbing can make skin worse.
- Follow-up plan
- Ask who can review your skin after you go home, and what to do if it flares.
Treatments often discussed
Describing acne to a doctor in English
Give a short history. Say when the acne began, where it appears, whether it hurts, and whether it leaves marks. Words like "whiteheads," "blackheads," "red bumps" and "deep painful lumps" are clear. Tell the doctor if breakouts follow your menstrual cycle.
List every medicine and product you use, including prescription creams, antibiotics, oral contraceptives and supplements. Say if you have taken isotretinoin before. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, because some acne medicines are not safe in pregnancy.
Because prescriptions differ between countries, ask for the generic names and strengths in writing. Ask how long a first plan should run before you judge it. If you will be home in a few days, ask which parts can be continued with a doctor near you.
Active Acne: common questions
Can a clinic clear my acne in one visit?
No. Acne is managed over weeks to months. A visit can start a plan and calm some spots, but not end the condition.
Is squeezing spots at a clinic safe?
Extractions done by trained staff under clean conditions are different from picking at home, but they can still leave marks. Ask what is planned.
Can I get prescription medicine as a visitor?
That depends on the doctor's assessment and local rules. Ask what is possible and how to continue at home.
Does diet matter?
Evidence is mixed. Some people notice triggers. Mention them to the doctor.
