What is an English consultation like, and how can you check the doctor understood you?

Consultations for English speakers may involve a doctor who speaks English, a bilingual coordinator, or a medical interpreter sitting in. Whichever setup you get, a few habits help you confirm that the doctor understood your concern and that you understood the plan.

Three common setups

Some doctors in Seoul consult in English themselves. In other clinics, a coordinator who speaks English joins the doctor and translates both ways. Occasionally a clinic arranges a dedicated medical interpreter, or a visitor brings a trusted bilingual friend.

Each setup can work well. What matters is that someone in the room can carry medical details accurately in both directions, not only greetings and prices. If you asked about this when booking, it is fair to check again on arrival.

Come with a short written list

Nerves and jet lag make it easy to forget questions. A short list on your phone keeps the conversation focused, and you can show it to the interpreter if a word does not translate well.

  • What exactly bothers you, in one or two sentences
  • What result you would be happy with, and what would worry you
  • Your flight date and any activities planned before it
  • Your medication and allergy list from the pre-visit summary

How to check you were understood

A simple technique is the teach-back. After the doctor explains a plan, say it back in your own words and ask whether you have it right. Then ask the doctor, through the interpreter if needed, to repeat what they understood your main concern to be.

If the two summaries do not match, pause and clarify before moving on. It can also help to point to the exact area in a mirror, since words like spot, mark, line, or patch may be translated in more than one way.

  • Ask: what do you understand my main concern to be?
  • Say back the plan, then ask: is that correct?
  • Point to the area in a mirror rather than describing it only in words

Questions worth asking every time

Beyond the plan itself, ask about the practical side of recovery. Treatments can cause redness, swelling, bruising, peeling, or changes in pigmentation, and how long these last varies between people. Knowing what may happen helps you judge whether the timing fits your trip.

  • What side effects are common, and which are rare but serious?
  • How many days of visible recovery might I expect?
  • Is it reasonable to fly on my planned date after this?
  • Are there alternatives, including doing nothing for now?

It is fine to say not today

You may feel pressure to decide on the spot, especially on a short trip. You are allowed to leave after the consultation, think it over, and come back another day or not at all. A careful clinic will usually respect that, and the doctor may also decide that a treatment is not suitable for you after examining your skin.

Before you leave the room, ask for the plan in writing, even as a short message in your chat thread. Seeing the treatment name, the area, and the suggested timing in text lets you check it calmly later, look up unfamiliar terms, and compare it with what you thought you heard. If the written version differs from your memory of the conversation, raise it before you book a treatment slot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own interpreter?

Often yes, but tell the clinic in advance. A friend who speaks Korean may still find medical terms hard, so a professional interpreter may be worth considering for complex discussions.

Can I record the consultation?

Ask first and respect the answer. If recording is not allowed, ask for a written summary of the plan or take notes yourself.

What if I disagree with the recommendation?

Say so and ask why it was suggested. You can also ask for alternatives or a less intensive option, or decide not to proceed.
